Google Play Store clocks the most downloads but still lags behind App Store in revenue

According to new statistics released by App Annie Index, Google’s Play Store exceeded the iOS app store by 45% in total downloads but still lagged behind when it comes to actual revenues. Worldwide, it is clear that Android is dominating the market, with over 80% marketshare, which has led to a surge in downloads from emerging markets like Russia and Brazil, but the downside is that a large number of apps on Android are free or based on the freemium model, which drastically lowers the barrier of entry, keeping the target markets in mind, whereas Apple’s iOS enjoys higher marketshare and install base in developed countries. China welcomes Nokia X with 1 million pre orders

The Nokia X made a huge (green) splash at the Mobile World Congress event a couple of weeks and has been rapidly making its moves into markets, with it launching in Malaysia, India and the Phillipines. It is now all set to launch in China, and just 5 days after announcing the device for the market and opening the pre-orders, Nokia has reportedly received 1 million of them already. The company posted this on its Weibo account with a celebratory image touting the big number.

Earlier this year, when Apple launched their latest and greatest iPhone – iPhone 5s, they also introduced a more colorful, but less powerful iPhone 5c. After a lot of talk with the Chinese telecom players, Apple introduced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in China right from the launch date. However, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c have not been available at China Telecom which is the world’s largest mobile network. Apple and China Telecom have announced that the new iPhones – iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are coming to China Telecom on January 17, 2014.

Oppo R833T mid range smartphone revealed in China

While flagships like the N1 keep coming, Oppo has sought to gain marketshare and mind share with its mid range devices too. It started with the Oppo R819, and now a new Oppo R833T mid range smartphone has been revealed in China. It’s a 4.3″ device with modest specifications, which is similar to the ones we have here in the Indian mid range market. The device runs on a 1.3 GHz Quad Core Cortex A7 processor and has 1 GB of RAM, with 4 GB of internal storage augmented with a micro SD expansion slot if needed. There is also a 5 MP camera on the back with a single LED flash and this phone unsurprisingly runs on the company’s own Color OS, with Android 4.2.2 underneath. The phone is undoubtedly aimed at the low-mid end range of smartphones which is the fastest growing segment in a market like China or India.

Xiaomi sells 380,000 devices in a few hours on Singles day in China

Xiaomi, the company that has recently been in the spotlight for a wide variety of reasons, has just sold 380,000 devices in just a few hours on Singles day in China. A quick TIL fact – Singles day in China is a massive day for shopping, like, for example Diwali in India or Thanksgiving, in the US. It has been reported that this day is perhaps better(in terms of sales) than the Cyber Monday that the US observes. The day, also known as the “Anti-Valentines” day, majorly consisting of singles from all around China having parties and such, spurs shopping of around 2 billion US dollars all over the country, and Xiaomi seems to have nicely stocked up for the demand, as you can see from the image above, taken by the International Chief and previously VP of Android, Hugo Barra.

Apple Might Be Cutting iPhone 5C Production

Reports say that Apple might be reducing the production of it’s iPhone 5C by 50% – from 300,000 units to 150,000 units. The source which leaked of the iPhone 5S and 5C before their announcements, claims that the reason behind this is the fall in the Grey market pricing for the phone.

Two pictures of a purported Nokia Smartwatch have leaked onto the internet. Could this be announced at the Nokia World event on the 22nd of October, or is it just some long forgotten prototype? We all know that the wearable gadget revolution is here. Google brought its Glass into the limelight with a firm vision(pun intended) on the future, Pebble made its Smartwatch, followed by Samsung with its Galaxy Gear and Sony with its second version of its pioneering Smartwatch. With the leak, it looks like even Nokia, which is all ready to get acquired by Microsoft, has or had its own plans for a wearable gadget.

Nokia 106 and Nokia 107 Dual SIM announced in China

The just announced Nokia 106 and Nokia 107 Dual SIM join the Finnish company’s feature phone portfolio. Both phones support quad band GSM networks but the Nokia 107 also brings dual SIM support to the mix.

The phones have a 1.8″ 56k TFT display and measure 112.9 x 47.5 x 4.8mm. Internally you’ll also find an FM Radio, LED light that can be used as a flashlight.
