Fitbit to launch a new health and fitness smartwatch later this year

Fitbit reported $353M in revenue, down 40% and sold 3.4M devices, up 14% sequentially in Q2 2017. The company recorded a loss of $58.2 million and a profit of $6.3 million.  Fitbit has been working on a new smartwatch and it will be released later this year.

Worldwide wearables market grows 16.9%, Fitbit still on top in Q4 2016: IDC

The worldwide wearables market reached a new all-time high as shipments reached 33.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016 (4Q16), growing 16.9% year over year, according to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker. Shipments for the entire year grew 25% as new vendors entered the market and previous leaders refreshed their product lineups. A total of 102.4 million devices were shipped in 2016.

Fitbit to slash 6% of workforce, 6.4 million devices sold in Q4 2016

Fitbit has announced preliminary results for Q4 2016. The company is slashing 6 percent of its global workforce which is 110 of its employees as a result of disappointing fourth quarter financials.

Fitbit acquires smartwatch maker Vector

Fitbit has acquired smartwatch maker Vector for an undisclosed sum. As a result of the acquisition, Vector Watch team and its software platform will become a part of Fitbit. The latest acquisition comes from Fitbit only a month after it acquired Pebble smartwatch maker.

Fitbit withdraws patent case against Jawbone

Fitbit has dropped a year old patent complaint against Jawbone. The fitness tracker and smartwatch maker had filed a complaint it the U.S. International Trade Commission, in which it had accused Jawbone of violating its patents. Fitbit is said to be close to buying smartwatch maker Pebble, according to a latest report from The Information. There is no word on the price of the deal but the report says it is for a “small amount”. Some reports are claiming the amount of acquisition between $34-$40 million.
