HERE Maps on Windows 8.1 has just received a bunch of new and important features. For starters HERE Maps get manual positioning which adds the ability to manually set your position even thought the app detects your location automatically. Users will simply have to tap on the green dot on the map or in its setting panel to indicate their position.

In a bid to enhance its HERE Map offering, Nokia has bought Desti for an undisclosed sum. The mapping startup and app maker uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to generate more personalized location searches and maps. Desti app is based out of the same research center as Siri and Nuance.

Helsinki based smartphone startup, Jolla, has announced that it will be integrating a mapping solution powered by Nokia’s HERE Maps division in its upcoming operating system dubbed as Sailfish OS. After selling out to Microsoft, one of the businesses that was left to the Finnish company was Nokia HERE Maps. Nokia HERE maps is one of the popular navigation tools and its best feature is that it is available offline. HERE, the location asset that Nokia is proud of, has just been announced for all Windows Phone 8 devices, not just a Nokia Lumia. This is a significant step towards Nokia’s contribution to the Windows Phone ecosystem, even though Nokia owns a majority of the market share. Devices like the HTC 8X will now be graced with HERE navigation and location apps that you get for free on Nokia Lumia smartphones.
