UC Web announces partnership with Trend Micro for in-browser mobile web safety assessment

Over at the Global Mobile Internet Conference, UCWeb has announced a new partnership with global internet security expert, Trend Micro. Under the agreement, both companies will work to provide mobile web safety assessments in the browser. The aim is provide a comprehensive safety net for users of the product via cloud based security scans in the browser and also for Android apps downloaded via the UC Web browser.

Trend Micro analyzes as much as 4.46TB of data every day and has identified 350,000 high risk Android applications. This number is further expected to grow by 400% to 1.4 million in 2013.

UC Web with a global userbase in excess of 400 million and with 200 million daily registered clicks aims to provide comprehensive cloud based security for its users through its partnership with Trend Micro. The technology in question is Trend Micro’s Application Reputation Service (MARS) that works with both websites and Android applications. The service has analyzed close to 3 million Android apps to date with about 560,000 of them being flagged as malicious. UC Web has added the feature to version 7.4 of its browser making it the world’s first ‘secure mobile browser’.Considering the browser’s popularity in developing markets, the move is a welcome addition. Quickoffice for Android and iOS now available for Google Apps for Business users

Back in June 2012, Google had acquired Quickoffice to strengthen its mobile productivity suite offerings. The company has now rolled out the application to Google Apps for Business customers. The application has already been available on the iPad but now Google and iPhone users too can edit Microsoft Office files using the application on their devices.

Speedtest.net app for iOS gets huge update including new UI and iPhone 5 support

If you  are a Speedtest.net addict like me, and if you happen to have an iOS device, the internet speed testing app for iOS got a huge update including a all new UI and support for iPhone 5. In the above screenshot you can see the new app UI which shows how the iPhone 5 is clocking crazy fast speeds over Vodafone’s 3G network here in Chennai. You can even share the speedtest result from within the app to Twitter, Facebook, email and SMS.

There is even an option to remove ads if you pay $1 or Rs.55. Much needed update for this app which is very useful when testing network speeds. If you already have the app installed on your iPhone, you must have the update notification within the app store.

Garageband for iOS introduces Audiobus support

Apple has issued an update for its popular music creation application, Garageband, which adds support for Audiobus. The addition is quite significant as it means that Apple recognizes the need for inter app communication which is something that has been lacking on iOS till now.

Leaked video on Youtube shows Google Now coming to iOS

Google Now is the personal assistant which was introduced to Android with version 4.1 Jelly Bean. Google Now is based on search and local data. As of now, Google Now has only been available for Android. Just some time back Google posted a Youtube video of Google Now coming to iPhone and iPad, but this video was removed instantly. Looks like Google did not mean to show the video as of yet but was leaked somehow and has since then been removed from their channel.

Google Now to be updated with widget support pretty soon

Google Now is one of the main features which debuted with Android 4.1, and is a direct competitor to iOS’s Siri. Google has been concentrating on this piece of software from a long time and has been updating it with more cards and features and just recently Google updated their support page which showed glimpses of Google Now widgets.

Apple releases iOS 6.1 for iPhone , iPod touch and iPad

Apple has just released the iOS 6.1 software update for the iPhone , iPad and iPod touch. The update just showed up on my iPhone 5 and was about 100MB in size. It looks like an update to fix a lot of bugs.

Highest number of Android and iOS devices get activated on Christmas Day

Looks like everyone did wait till Christmas day to open their presents, as it has been reported that Android and iOS device activation was the highest ever on December 25th. According to Flurry analytics, 17.4 million Android and iOS devices were activated on Christmas day compared to an average of 4 million activations on any other day, which is an increase of a whopping 332%.

Blackberry 10 to launch with 70,000 apps in App world

Apps have become important for every mobile operating system, thanks to Apple and iOS, both Andorid and iOS now have more than half a million applications and one of the places where Blackberry failed at their O.S and smartphones before was the category of apps available. Now, Frank Boulben, the CMO of RIM has stated that consumers can expect more than 70,000 apps for the Blackberry 10 at launch.

Now 70,000 applications is really good news, but it also matters whether these applications are actually useful or are just useless. The quality of this application also matters, as developers have already shifted to platforms which is more popular like Android and iOS, so it is important to know whether they will devote time to make the experience of users better or not. Blackberry 10 is set to launch on Jan 30 2013, and it is a very important launch for RIM which will decided their survival. Google just launched a dedicated YouTube camera application for iOS users. Called YouTube Capture, the app lets you record and instantly share a video clip to YouTube right from within its interface. The video can also be shared on a range of mobile networks straight from the app itself.

Responding to user demand, the application serves not just for browsing files but also makes for a media viewer for cloud based files. Google to Release iOS Maps App Tonight

Last month, it was reported that Google was getting closer to submitting a maps app for iOS. Now, AllThingsD reports that Google plans to release the maps application tonight.

Google plans to release its much-awaited iOS Maps app tonight, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Unlike the Google’s Maps app that was included with iOS 5 and earlier, it is also reported that the new maps app will also offer free turn-by-turn navigation as has been available on Google Maps for Android and which Apple provides in its Maps app.
