The Finnish upstart, Jolla, has just hit another milestone and is now available for purchase in Europe. Running on the Sailfish operating system, the phone has a very interesting user interface derived from the remains of the erstwhile MeeGo project. The phone is already on sale in Finland and has been shipping to users for a few days now.
Jolla’s self named phone has fairly mid range specifications but that doesn’t hold it back as the hardware and software are very well optimized for each other. The screen is a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 540×960 pixels. Powering it is a 1.4Ghz dual core Snapdragon 400 processor paired with 1GB of RAM. The camera module is 8MP alongside a 2MP front facing unit. Users get 16GB of built in storage. Continue reading “Jolla phone goes on sale in Europe, priced at €399”

Seen as a major move from a small, yet significant new player in the mobile industry, Finalnd’s Jolla(pronounced as yo-la) announced today that the Sailfish OS is now fully compatible with Android apps as well as Android hardware. It was already confirmed that Sailfish would run Android apps, but the question was when. Now we know.
Taking advantage of the already robust and immensely popular Android ecosystem is what Jolla have done, on top of the unique UX the Sailfish OS offers. Not only you can download popular Android apps on the Sailfish OS, which Jolla claims, is without any modifications, the operating system is also Android hardware compatible. Meaning Vendors can take Sailfish OS and make devices with their current Android-based hardware implementations. Or one day, you can possibly load Sailfish on your Android phone, if you wish.

Jolla, the smartphone start up company from Finland, has just revealed its first Sailfish OS based device, with colourful replaceable shells they are calling the “Other Half”. This is the first Jolla device that has appeared ever since they started the “other half” teaser campaign on their social media channels. Running on the intuitive Sailfish operating system, the device will be able to run native apps as well as Android apps(as mentioned earlier) on a seamless user interface. We had a hands on demo of the Sailfish OS earlier at the Mobile World Congress, you can watch it for more information about the intuitive OS.
The device is slated for a end-of-2013 availability and there is currently a pre-order program in place. Here is Marc Dillon of Jolla, explaining about it –

At MWC 2013 , we were lucky to sit down with Marc Dillon, CEO of Jolla which is a mobile start-up based in Finland. While Jolla might be new to mobile scene, most of the team previously worked with Nokia for several years before stepping out to start Jolla. If you were a fan of the Nokia N9 or any of the Maemo or MeeGo devices , you will surely appreciate the approach Jolla’s Sailfish OS brings to the mobile arena.
Watch a nice 6 minute overview of the Sailfish OS presented by none other than the CEO Marc himself on a Nokia N950 developer device.

Jolla Mobile, the startup born from the ashes of the MeeGo team at Nokia showed off the UI for their brand new mobile OS today at the Slush conference. While there’s a lot more yet to be revealed, the OS itself is based on the open source Mer core. The interface is heavily inspired by the much praised Harmattan UI on the Nokia N9 and places a lot of emphasis on single handed usage.
Jolla Mobile, the Finnish mobile startup has unveiled their new Sailfish OS with effortless and innovative User Interface (UI) at the Slush startup event in Finland as they announced last month. They have also released Sailfish Software Development Kit (SDK) for the developer community and announced that the Jolla devices would be powered by ST-Ericsson’s Nova Thor processor. The much talked about upcoming smartphone manufacturer, Jolla Mobile, comprising of ex-Nokia employees today announced that they have managed to secure 200 million Euros worth of funding. According to the company, “The 200M€ ecosystem financing will come in gradually from Jolla and as members join the alliance, which will include chipset vendors, OEM and ODM manufacturers, operators and retailers.”
Nokia launched an amazing phone last year called the N9. It ran a Linux based operating system called MeeGo, it didn’t have any front facing buttons, it had a perfectly sized 3.9 inch screen, and the press absolutely fell in love it. So much so that Stephen Elop decided to kill the N9 shortly after it shipped because he wanted the world to pay attention to the company’s Windows Phone lineup. In fact, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 are basically the N9, but with Microsoft’s software on-board.
Since MeeGo was effectively killed, those who worked on the OS had a tough decision to make: Keep working for Nokia, but on projects they really couldn’t care less about, or leave the company and try to start their own thing. This is how Jolla was born. The company is based in Helsinki, has roughly 50 employees, and their goal is to announce a phone by the end of this year. Last month I sat down with the CEO, Jussi Hurmola, and had a 20 minute chat with him. You can listen to or read that interview here.
One of the questions I asked him then and the question that’s been on everyone’s mind since is how will Jolla be competitive without an app ecosystem? According to Arctic Startup, who quotes the Finnish publication 3T, Jolla’s CEO says that his OS will run HTML5 apps, Qt apps, and something that hasn’t been confirmed until today: Android applications. This will be enabled via a software project called ACL (application compatibility layer).
And the news doesn’t stop there. Jolla’s CEO has also confirmed that their first phone will have a 3.5 inch screen. Is that a dangerous thing to do in today’s market? Maybe, but Jolla is crazy enough that it might just work!

Update 2: Jolla has unveiled their first device running Sailfish OS.
Update: Arctic Startup now says the phone will have a screen larger than 3.5 inches. Before they reported that it would be exactly 3.5 inches.

Nokia’s stint with MeeGo might be over but the community is not going to let go of the promising OS. Ex-Nokians who were part of the development team have banded together to form Jolla which is Finnish for ‘rescue sail boat’ which is clearly a tongue in cheek reference to the burning ship memo by Nokia’s Elop.
