Intel and Samsung file amicus brief to support FTC lawsuit against Qualcomm

Earlier in January this year US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm for anti-competitive practices. Now, Intel and Samsung have filed amicus briefs with the court supporting the FTC’s lawsuit and opposing Qualcomm’s request to dismiss the case. Both the companies claim that Qualcomm uses its dominant position in the mobile processor industry to keep other players out. Apple continues legal battle with Qualcomm, files new lawsuit in U.K.

Apple has expanded its ongoing legal battle against Qualcomm by adding a new lawsuit in the U.K, according to a report from Bloomberg.  This is the third patent lawsuit by Apple against Qualcomm this year.

Microsoft sues Kyocera over Android patent infringement

Microsoft has filed a patent lawsuit against Kyocera alleging that the Japanese electronics maker infringed some of Microsoft’s mobile phone patents, according to a report by Reuters.

Nvidia files patent lawsuit against Samsung and Qualcomm for patent infringement

Nvidia has sued Samsung and Qualcomm for infringing 7 of its patents.  The maker of graphics chips and processors  is asking the International Trade Commission (ITC) and in the U.S. District Court in Delaware to confirm that, ban devices, and award them damages.

Apple and Samsung to end all their patent disputes outside the US

Samsung and Apple announced in a joint statement that they will drop all ongoing patent lawsuits outside the U.S. However, the smartphone rivals have not yet settled the dispute. The two companies have sued each other in a total of eight countries viz, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Netherlands, the UK, France, and Italy, and all these cases are being dropped, without being settled and without any cross-licensing agreements being negotiated.

Microsoft files patent lawsuit against Samsung over Android royalties

Microsoft has sued Samsung in U.S. District Court, over patent licencing deal. The company claims that the South Korean giant has stopped making royalty payments on time last fall and is refusing to pay interest for the delay.

Oracle wins copyright appeal against Google, new trial to follow

Remember when Google won the lawsuit against Oracle for Android’s copyright infringement on Java? That ruling, which was from a Districts court in San Francisco, has been overruled by a Federal Appeals court, which has practically rubbished the former’s decision. The new ruling states that Oracle’s Java APIs, the ones it acquired as a part of its Sun Microsystems acquisition, do fall under copyright and hence, a new trial on fair use and damages will follow. This is a big blow to Google, purveyor of the omnipresent Android operating system, as it would need to face a fresh set of trials, again. Oracle, on the other hand, will see this as an opportunity to get back at the Mountain View company.

Microsoft loses to Motorola on a patent case in Germany

Germany has become a battle ground when it comes to patent cases between top mobile device manufacturing companies. In a recent patent infringement case filed against Motorola by Microsoft which revolves around an application running on various devices, Microsoft lost to Motorola. This news made me a bit happy and surprised as this is Motorola’s first lawsuit they have won in the recent years.

Motorola pulls out of the lawsuit filed against Apple in August

Motorola had filed a lawsuit against Apple over seven patents in August which if won would ban every device manufactured by Google from iPhone to the iMac. Now reports are that Google owned Motorola is taking a step back and pulling back the lawsuits which they had filed on import ban of Apple products.

Antitrust claim against Samsung dismissed by US court

After a bad week in court, Samsung hears some dandy news. While Apple claimed “Samsung misrepresented its intent to license certain patents on fair terms”, federal judge Lucy Koh in California has disregarded some of Apple’s antitrust claims against Samsung. Nevertheless, Apple can still reform it by revising their complaint.

InterDigital Files Lawsuit Against Nokia, ZTE and Huawei

The battle between Nokia and Apple is well known. In the end Apple was forced to pay licensing fees to Nokia. Now another lawsuit has been  filed by InterDigital against Nokia, ZTE and Huawei.

Samsung Backs out: Drops Apple countersuit

Just a few weeks back we had heard that Apple  sued Samsung at their home ground in South Korea, and we expected Samsung to fight back by another law Suit against Apple, but Samsung took a different route this time, they dropped the counter-suit against Apple of about 10 claims.
