Sony have today unveiled an updated version of their Android Wear powered Smartwatch 3 which aims to solve a large criticism leveraged towards the Android Wear device. Announced today, the Smartwatch 3 now comes in a fetching Stainless Steel option which offers an alternative to the rather plain silicone strap version currently available. One of the biggest trends in technology at the moment is wearable devices such as smartwatches and whilst many manufacturers have begun launching their first devices this year, Sony’s already on the third generation of the Sony Smartwatch range. Whilst this year’s smartwatch shares many similarities with its predecessors (such as durability and overall design), it features a few major differences and the biggest of these is its powered by Google’s new Android Wear operating system.
Whilst previous devices were powered by Sony’s proprietary user interface, the adoption of Android Wear has meant Sony can stop focusing on the software and instead look to innovate in hardware and design. Smartwatches may have initially been considered a passing fad when Sony originally announced the Smartwatch range and Samsung introduced the Galaxy Gear last year but over the past twelve months, we’ve seen many manufacturers announce smartwatches; from multiple new Samsung Gears to smartwatches from LG, Asus, Motorola, Huawei and Microsoft there’s a lot of competition. Sony announced the SmartWatch 3 powered by Android Wear at the IFA, Berlin 2014 yesterday. We got our hands on the SmartWatch3 SWR50 which is company’s foray into Android Wear. The device sports a 1.6-inch (320 x 320 pixels) TFT LCD capacitive touch screen display.
