Twitter had announced earlier this month that is experimenting with a new feature that will let users mute accounts of people they follow. Today, the microblogging site has officially launched the update to its Web client along with Android and iOS apps. Instead of taking a drastic step and unfollow a certain person completely on Twitter, users can now simply mute the tweets from them.
In the same way you can turn on device notifications so you never miss a tweet from your favorite users, you can now mute users you’d like to hear from less. Muting a user on Twitter means their tweets and retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user.
wrote Twitter in a company blog post.
Another good thing about the feature is that the user’s account which you are muting will not know that they have been muted, so you are safe. However, the muted user can still reply, retweet and favourite your tweets. The feature is part of Twitter’s overall strategy to make its service more accessible to a wider range of people. It will roll out the feature to its more than 255 million monthly users over the coming weeks.
