The Nokia Lumia 1020 has finally launched in India today, at an event in New Delhi. The 41 Megapixel PureView camera had been doing its victory lap as one of the best camera phones around the world and it has finally reached destination India, alas without a price tag. But along with the Lumia 1020, accessories were also launched, namely the Camera Grip and the Wireless Charging shell. Weirdly enough, the accessories have been priced, with the Camera Grip coming at Rs. 7,500 and the Wireless Charging shell coming in at Rs. 3,200. Nokia’s new camera centric flagship, the Lumia 1020, is already packing some serious photography capabilities. Wireless charging: The future or a passing fad?
Wireless charging, much like many other technologies that find their ways into the hands of the everyday consumer has a long and unspectacular past. First attempted, at least in the public sphere, in the early 1900’s by one Nikolas Tesla, whose many brilliant ideas and even more spectacular failures (this being one of them) coloured a rather interesting period in innovation and developments for consumer-facing products. The idea was revived in the mid-2000’s by a number of independent individuals working out of MIT, Jeff Lieberman and Marin Soljacic and team. Wireless power transmission is a bit of a misnomer as wires are almost certainly involved in nearly every step of the way with the sole exception being the wire usually linking the power supply to the “sink” which is the device using the power in the first place.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is currently the most anticipated smartphone and they will be announcing this device in a few months, but that doesn’t stop the rumor mill from running, and one of the latest rumor is that the SGS 4 is going to support Qi standard wireless charging.
