Jolla’s first Sailfish based smartphone went on sale back in November 2013 in Helsinki through local operator DNA and it went on sale online in select parts of Europe. We unboxed it couple of months back. The company has just announced that its Sailfish OS and the smartphone is ready for commercial release outside Europe. It has also announced that the Sailfish OS would be officially ported to Android devices. Jolla phone goes on sale in Europe, priced at €399
The Finnish upstart, Jolla, has just hit another milestone and is now available for purchase in Europe. Running on the Sailfish operating system, the phone has a very interesting user interface derived from the remains of the erstwhile MeeGo project. The phone is already on sale in Finland and has been shipping to users for a few days now.
Jolla’s self named phone has fairly mid range specifications but that doesn’t hold it back as the hardware and software are very well optimized for each other. The screen is a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 540×960 pixels. Powering it is a 1.4Ghz dual core Snapdragon 400 processor paired with 1GB of RAM. Open source advocates have a date to look forward to as Jolla has announced that it will start selling its device on 27th of November. Jolla smartphones to ship with Yandex app store for Android apps, HERE mapping onboard
Helsinki based smartphone startup, Jolla, has announced that it will be integrating a mapping solution powered by Nokia’s HERE Maps division in its upcoming operating system dubbed as Sailfish OS. The partnership will involve licensing up to date map data and location information such as restaurants for over 190 countries. Jolla’s Sailfish OS now fully compatible with Android apps and Android hardware
Seen as a major move from a small, yet significant new player in the mobile industry, Finalnd’s Jolla(pronounced as yo-la) announced today that the Sailfish OS is now fully compatible with Android apps as well as Android hardware. It was already confirmed that Sailfish would run Android apps, but the question was when. Now we know.
Taking advantage of the already robust and immensely popular Android ecosystem is what Jolla have done, on top of the unique UX the Sailfish OS offers. Not only you can download popular Android apps on the Sailfish OS, which Jolla claims, is without any modifications, the operating system is also Android hardware compatible. Meaning Vendors can take Sailfish OS and make devices with their current Android-based hardware implementations. Or one day, you can possibly load Sailfish on your Android phone, if you wish.

Jolla reveals its first Sailfish OS device with the other half and a pre order program
Jolla, the smartphone start up company from Finland, has just revealed its first Sailfish OS based device, with colourful replaceable shells they are calling the “Other Half”. This is the first Jolla device that has appeared ever since they started the “other half” teaser campaign on their social media channels. Running on the intuitive Sailfish operating system, the device will be able to run native apps as well as Android apps(as mentioned earlier) on a seamless user interface. We had a hands on demo of the Sailfish OS earlier at the Mobile World Congress, you can watch it for more information about the intuitive OS.
The device is slated for a end-of-2013 availability and there is currently a pre-order program in place. Here is Marc Dillon of Jolla, explaining about it –

At MWC 2013 , we were lucky to sit down with Marc Dillon, CEO of Jolla which is a mobile start-up based in Finland. While Jolla might be new to mobile scene, most of the team previously worked with Nokia for several years before stepping out to start Jolla.If you were a fan of the Nokia N9 or any of the Maemo or MeeGo devices , you will surely appreciate the approach Jolla’s Sailfish OS brings to the mobile arena.
