ZTE Grand S revealed, sticks 5inch 1080p screen in a 6.9mm thin frame

ZTE just revealed its latest smartphone, the Grand S at CES. Equipped with a 5inch 1080p display which is fast becoming the norm in high end handsets, the phone runs on a 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro chip. The OS of choice here is Android 4.1 JellyBean. A 13MP camera is found over at the back which is capable of recording video in 1080p. A 2MP camera is located at the front for video conferencing.

Internal specs also include 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built in storage which can be further expanded with a microSD card. The handset is particularly thin and measures just 6.9mm. Making a handset that thin means that the company had to make sacrifices and the battery life suffers. We’re not sure how well the 1780 mAh battery will be able to keep up with that high resolution display. We’ll be bringing you our hands on impressions with the ZTE Grand S shortly.

ZTE U950: For $160 you can own a quad core semi-flagship smartphone

ZTE has just announced an Android 4.0 powered smartphone called the U950. It’s got a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor under the hood, 1 GB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, and a 4.3 inch display that pushes 800 x 480 pixels. In other words, it’s an above average device. What makes it amazing is the price: $160. That’s totally out of this world when you consider that most smartphones in that price range have a single core processor and half the amount of RAM. Will the U950 ever be sold outside of China? That hasn’t been confirmed yet. All we know is that it’s going on sale in China on November 11th. At first only 100,000 units will be made, which means there’s a pretty big chance it’s going to sell out. Continue reading “ZTE U950: For $160 you can own a quad core semi-flagship smartphone”

ZTE and Mozilla partner up, plan on selling a Firefox phone in Q1 2013

Mozilla, makers of the once loved Firefox web browser, are trying to become relevant again. Their strategy is to create a mobile operating system that leverages their HTML rendering engine so that developers can write their applications using the same languages they’re used to using when creating websites. In other words, they want “web apps” to get the same sort of respect that “native apps” get. Today ZTE is announcing that they’re going to unveil a phone either by the end of this year or early next year running Mozilla’s OS. David Dai Shu, ZTE’s spokesperson, told Retuers that: “We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android.” Continue reading “ZTE and Mozilla partner up, plan on selling a Firefox phone in Q1 2013”

Is this the yet to be announced ZTE Blade III?

ZTE, one of the two major Chinese handset vendors, the other being Huawei, is well known for making budget Android phones. The “Blade”, which first launched in September 2010 in the UK as the “Orange San Francisco“, proved to be a smash hit because it offered people the full Android experience for less than 100 British pounds. About a year later the “Blade II” came out, offering a faster processor and a newer version (2.3 Gingerbread) of Android. Now as far as we know ZTE has yet to annonce the “Blade III”, which is why this writer was a bit shocked to see it on his local electronics dealer’s website. Assuming the specifications are correct, it’s basically the “Blade II”, but with a cleaner design, Android 4.0 on-board, and luckily the same budget price. Some quick Googling reveals that sites in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark list the “Blade III” as having a 4 inch screen, which goes against the claimed 3.5 inches on the Finnish website. It should also be noted that the Finnish website lists Samsung as the manufacturer of the “Blade III”, so believe who you want to believe.
