Google to acquire 1.28% stake in Airtel, invest up to $1 billion
Airtel today announced that it signed a long-term, multi-year agreement with Google to accelerate the growth of India’s digital ecosystem. As a part of the deal, Google as a part of Google for India Digitization Fund will make an investment in Airtel, which will include a $700M equity investment (1.28% ownership in Airtel) and a corpus of up to $300M that will go towards implementing mutually agreed commercial initiatives over the course of the next five years. Airtel has launched new Mobile and Home Broadband plans that come bundled with free 1-year subscription to Disney+ Hotstar. These new Airtel mobile prepaid plans come with bundled data, unlimited calling, 100 SMS/day along with subscription to Disney+ Hotstar. This comes after the launch of similar Disney+ Hotstar bundled packs from Jio earlier this month, but Jio’s 56 days plan costs Rs. 666 and the 365 days plan costs Rs. 2599.
