Hutchison Whampoa, the owners of the Hutch brand, and the Ruia group promoted Essar Telecom have decided to consolidate their operations into a new entity christened as Hutchison Essar Ltd.

PalmOne rebrands as Palm

PalmOne has formally changed its name to Palm, unveiled a new logo and moved its headquarters, the company said on Thursday.
The new logo will start appearing on products this autumn, Palm said. The company has also begun trading on the Nasdaq under a new symbol: PALM. The gadget maker’s line of handhelds includes Zire, Tungsten, Treo and the recently launched LifeDrive.

Then Handspring bought Palm and sold the OS so you had PalmSource and PalmOne. Then PalmOne got confused and people stopped buying PDAs so they did poorly until their recent release of the LifeDrive. Now, however, we’re back to Palm again. Got it? It’s not that big a deal, but the now-rebranded Palm might be able to dig itself out of its slump by making some nice all-in-one devices, like the LifeDrive.

Nokia N90 voted European Media Phone of the Year

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that its flagship imaging device, the Nokia N90, has been awarded the European Media Phone of the Year 2005-2006 by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), the largest editorial multimedia organization in Europe. The award is an endorsement of the Nokia N90’s industry-leading feature set, which makes it one of the most high performance devices in the marketplace.

Mobiles catch Cabir virus at world athletics

Visitors to the world athletics championships in Finland have had to brave wind and rain, and officials say they now face the possibility of catching the world’s first mobile phone virus.

Officials in mobile-mad Finland, home to the world’s largest mobile phone maker, Nokia, said there had been outbreaks of the Cabir virus at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.

Jarmo Koski, a security official at telecoms firm TeliaSonera, said: "At most we are speaking about dozens of infections but during a short period and in one spot this is a huge number."

Cabir, first reported in June last year, uses Bluetooth short range wireless signals to jump between mobile phones.

Nokia: No iTunes for next multimedia mobile

Nokia has no agreement with Apple for the iTunes music service to be included on its upcoming N91 multimedia phone, the Finnish phone giant said on Thursday.But Nokia said because of the design of the new N-series phones, software developers could readily produce programs to allow the gadgets to use services like iTunes.

A spokesman for Nokia’s multimedia division said: "There is no commercial agreement between Nokia and Apple to integrate iTunes into the N-series devices.

"But since this is based on a computer platform, anybody – including Apple, if they so wish – can very easily develop this kind of application and offer it to consumers, via the internet, for example."

Finnish daily Taloussanomat had previously reported that Nokia would bring iTunes to the N91 model.

The spokesman said Nokia had already seen such applications in research labs but had not agreed to any commercial deals: "We are not making any exclusive arrangements with any music store but believe that we want to give the consumer the choice of where they want to purchase their music."

Music phones produced by Nokia, the world’s number one handset maker, have so far been seen as competitors to Apple’s successful iPod device and iTunes service.

Siemens sells mobile phones unit to BenQ

German engineering giant Siemens is selling its mobile phones unit to much smaller Taiwanese rival BenQ, it said on Tuesday, drawing a line under hundreds of millions of euros of losses.

The deal — which will cost Siemens 350 million euros ($431 million) before tax — will enable BenQ to double its annual revenues to $10 billion, the company said, and catapult it out of relative obscurity into the world’s top 10 mobile handset vendors.

BenQ will use the Siemens brand name for five years and will take over some high-profile sports sponsorship contracts, including one with star soccer team Real Madrid.

It will also take on 6,000 Siemens employees — half of whom are in Germany, where many have job guarantees until 2006 negotiated last year in exchange for longer working hours.

The company’s headquarters will remain in Munich, Germany.

In return Siemens will acquire a 2.5-percent stake in fast-growing BenQ — Taiwan’s top maker of computer equipment and mobile phones — with the issue of 50 million euros worth of new BenQ shares.

The tablet, which was unveiled on the 25 of May at the LinuxWorld Summit in New York, will allow users to browse the web, check e-mail, read the latest news, listen to Internet radio or their own music, watch videos and store and view images.

“We’re very excited about the release of the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet,” said Timothy Ney, executive director of the GNOME Foundation. “We are also really grateful to Nokia for donating the proceeds of the developer device program to the GNOME Foundation.”

The 770 Internet Tablet has a host of utilities, including a file manager, PDF reader, notes and sketch capabilities, as well as games. It has a high-resolution 4.13-inch touch screen, 800×480 resolution and 65,536 colors that will show off the truly impressive graphic environment. It also features an on-screen keyboard and handwriting capabilities, as well as zooming, panning and full-screen features.
