Motorola Defy Preview – the lifeproof phone

Motorola’s new Android budget smartphone is a rare thing – a semi rugged phone that looks like any other normal phone. It is dust proof, water and scratch resistant. Motorola calls it the ‘Lifeproof’ phone. I call it a freaking awesome phone.Check out our little Motorola Defy preview.

When I first heard of the Defy, I expected to be greeted with a smartphone equivalent of a Panasonic Toughbook laptop, but no – the Defy looks like any normal smartphone. It is even smaller than my Nokia N8! . It won’t take any design awards home as far as physical aesthetics is concerned, but it isn’t something you would be embarrassed to own. In fact it looks rather cute! Continue reading “Motorola Defy Preview – the lifeproof phone”

Dubai At Night Through The Eyes Of The Nokia N8

I was recently invited to the pre-launch of the Nokia N8 in the Middle East, which took place in Dubai, and while it was my first time handling the N8 and I came away pretty impressed, one thing I wanted to do was be able to test the camera. We were in Dubai, Nokia was launching a 12MP cameraphone, and they didn’t think it’d be smart to give us each an N8 to take photos, you know, to convince us of how cool their phone is! They only had 4 or 5 N8s for us to test, hooked to an alarm-triggered table, inside the conference walls, with awkward lights around them. Not cool. Especially when you think that with Xenon flash and the largest sensor for a cameraphone, the N8 is basically made for night photography.

Lucky for me though, I was able to snatch one prototype from a Nokian (insert evil laugh) and get loose around Dubai for a few minutes before having to hand it back reluctantly, not forgetting, obviously, to bluetooth the images I took over to my N97 Mini. A Byte of Apple : iPhone 4 Press Con Predictions

The death-grip-gate drama surrounding the iPhone 4 and its mysterious signal dropping is coming to a head, with Apple hastily convening a press conference later tonight at its Cupertino campus. A quick recap if you’re just tuning in – after a number of users reported signal and call/data drops when their hands bridged the new iPhone 4 antenna, Apple issued a public statement stating it was a mere ‘formula error’ that led to users seeing more signal bars than they should in certain cases. It took independent body Consumer Reports, which tested three iPhone 4s in its radio frequency isolation room and issued a ‘not recommended’ status due to the significant reception problems (when holding the phone over its lower-left corner), for Apple to pull together an event to tackle this issue head-on.

Now, in typical Apple fashion, an invite to this event, even to the select few who do receive it, is short on detail, except that it will be around the company’s flagship smartphone. This is a first for Apple – as far back as I can remember, and aficionados out there can correct me if I am wrong, Apple has never called for a press conference for anything other than a new product announcement. Amidsts all the theories and expectations around what Apple should do at this event, here are our educated predictions about how it will go down come Friday 16th July, 10 AM Pacific time:

@MichaelxHell’s Nokia N8 Hands-on Impressions Part 1: Hardware

It’s been very quiet around Nokia the last few months. After the big N-Series failures from the last Years (N97, N96, N85, N76 etc) a lot of people, me included, turned away from Nokia, jumping ship to either Android or Apple. And for a good reason i must say, i’ve experienced Android with a HTC Hero that i bought via Contract and i must say i was impressed. And it continued with the Hero from there, with Android gaining a lot of strength. However, as much as i love the look and feel of Android, i missed the allround capabilities of a Nokia Phone. I’m a multimedia guy, always been, so N-series have always been my choice. I always had love for the Android OS, but not so much for the Devices. HTC puts in some pretty neat internals in the phone, however misses a good camera or decent speakers. Sony Ericsson had okay (although plasticy) hardware, but their OS failed. I have yet to try any LG products, but you see from my Points that, no matter how good the OS is, i always missed the decent hardware. Symbian^1 may look and feel outdated, but the Hardware is what always made me come back to Nokia. Apart from that, the Community that Nokia has built is still unmatched and can never be beaten. This of course not only comes from their devices and its fans, a lot of the following also comes due to marketing stunts from wellknown british PR agency 1000 heads/WOM World Nokia.

However, there was still something missing. As good as Devices like the N900, the X6 16GB or even the N97mini were, i still had days where i went back to my Nokia N82, especially when on the road and i wanted to share some great pics. Now if you note, my N82 is more than 2 years old and still going strong. It’s been 2 years, since Nokia brought out a decent device for hobby photographers like myself. Yes there is the N86, but what did it really bring to the table? An 8 megapixel, carl zeiss equipped Camera, but with a dual LED flash. As good as the device was in daylight conditions, how could they even dare to label it as next photography device!? As soon as the sun went down, the N86 was just another phone with a dual LED.
