Sony was one among the first of the electronics giant to jump into the smart watch category and it has so far launched a couple of smart watches. Close on the heels of the announcements from Google for Android Wear and Motorola’s Moto 360 Smartwatch, LG has announced that it will actually be making the first smartwatch powered by the new wearables platform. The LG G watch, as it is called, will be the first smartwatch to release to the market, powered by Google’s Android Wear platform. LG and Google have apparently worked on this device together, right from design, just like a Nexus product. The details of the LG G watch have not been revealed yet, but the availability is set to the second quarter of 2014.

Right after Google announced that Android is coming to wearables with Android Wear, Motorola has brought itself to the fore of this new Android Wear ecosystem by announcing its first Smartwatch – the Moto 360. As you might have guessed from the name, the Moto 360 has a circular display, which is a first for smartwatches. Android Wear marks an interesting development in the smartphone, although this has been rumoured for quite a while now. Powered by Google Now as its main contextual engine, Android Wear enables wearables like the Moto 360 to take at-a-glance information to the next level.
Samsung announced the successor of their original Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the MWC 2014 earlier this year – Gear 2. Samsung ditched Andriod for Tizen as a platform for their smartwatch and introduced two variants – Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. Pebble, the company responsible for the uber popular Smartwatch that goes by the same name, recently unveiled its new hardware, the Pebble Steel Smartwatch and along with it came the announcement of the first ever app store for Smartwatches. Yes, Pebble has its own app store now, consisting of a whole lot of Watchfaces and native apps that work standalone, like mini games or work with the phone over Bluetooth and can even access the internet now. One of the many changes that Pebble did with its ecosystem was opening a mature version of its SDK to many developers, making it easier to program for the Smartwatch. We think the app store is a natural progression of that announcement. The store resides inside Pebble’s own smartwatch app in iOS as well as Android, but the latter is only available for developers and is in beta, with consumer availability stated as coming soon.
Fresh off the announcement of Pebble Steel, the smartwatch company also announced its own App Store for its Smartwatches. Called the Pebble App Store, the repository of apps and watch faces with curated lists will reside inside the official Pebble apps for iOS and Android, according to the company. This move has been expected to happen for some time now, especially with the growing popularity of the Smartwatch and the homebrew developer support it gathered in the initial months of launch. If numbers are anything to go by, about 300,000 Pebbles have been sold so far and software bits like apps and watch faces for the Pebble have been already downloaded over 3 million times through third party curated app stores like MyPebbleFaces.com, which is arguably the most popular, for now. That’s definitely going to change with the introduction of the Pebble App Store, and more over, with the introduction of SDK 2.0, developers can now do more with the Pebble and the new App Store will be having that as the base minimum requirement for apps.
